Weftwell privacy
Last updated 4 November 2026. This covers the Weftwell web app and the Weftwell app for iPhone and Android.
Weftwell helps you practice a hard conversation with someone you care about: you talk with a simulated person and get coaching. It is rehearsal and education, not therapy, diagnosis or a crisis service. There is no account, and nothing is kept under your name.
What leaves your device, and why
- Your practice. What you type or say in a practice, the situation you describe, your answers on the setup screen and your messages to Remy are sent to the Weftwell server. When practice uses AI, the server passes them to Anthropic, the AI company whose model plays the simulated person, writes the coaching and helps check what you write for signs that you may need support right away. Before anything is sent to Anthropic, you are asked once, and you can withdraw that in Profile, under Data and privacy. A conversation you describe is kept on your device with the practice shaped from it. If you open it again after the Weftwell server has let it go (six hours at most, sooner if the server restarts), your answers are sent to Anthropic once more, to shape the practice again.
- Your voice. Audio of you never reaches the Weftwell server. When you speak, your browser or phone turns your speech into text (in the app, Apple's speech recognition on iPhone and Google's on Android), which may send the audio to that company to do it. Only the text is sent to Weftwell.
- The simulated person's voice. With voice replies on, the person's lines, which can include details you gave, may be sent as text to ElevenLabs to be spoken aloud. In the Android app, when the server has no voice, your phone's own text-to-speech speaks the lines instead, usually on the phone itself; if you have chosen a network voice in Android's settings, the text may be sent to Google to be spoken.
- Usage counts. Anonymous events such as "feedback viewed" or "retry chosen". Each has a random id made on your device, the time, the app version and a short label, such as which situation you chose. Events during a practice also carry a random id for that practice. On your first visit Weftwell also records the website that linked here (the site's name only), the page you arrived on and your device's language. On any visit from a link with a campaign, partner or practice tag, it records that tag. It records your answers to the optional questions and the choices you pick in Set up your practice, and technical counts for each practice: how much text was processed, how long replies took, and any errors. Both ids go with each practice request, so those counts can be tied to it. They never include the words you or the character say.
- A device id for the daily limit. A separate random id made on your device goes with each request, so the server can limit how much one device practices in a day.
What the Weftwell server keeps
- A practice conversation is held in memory for up to two hours, so the coaching can refer back to it, then dropped. A practice shaped around a situation you described is held in memory for up to six hours. The person's spoken lines are held for up to two minutes while they play. None of this is written to disk.
- The usage counts and the technical counts are written to the server's disk to measure whether Weftwell helps people. They are not linked to your name, email or any account.
- Your IP address is held in memory for ten minutes to limit requests, and the device id for the current day to apply the daily limit. Neither is written to disk.
- The company that hosts the server may keep standard request logs (such as IP address, time and the address requested) under its own policy.
What stays on your device
Your practice history, including the words of your recent conversations, skill progress, settings, saved plan, reminders, the quick practice offered on Home, your choices in Set up your practice, your practice path, the conversations you describe (your answers and the practice shaped from them) and any unfinished conversation are stored on your device: in the browser's storage on the web, and in the app's own storage on your phone (which your phone's own backup includes, if you use one). Your first name, if you give it, and the region you pick for crisis resources stay on the device too.
Your choices
- Delete your data. Profile, "Data and privacy", "Delete practice data from this device" clears your history, settings, saved plan, reminders and the conversations you described on this device, and gives this device a new random id. Deleting the app does the same.
- Withdraw consent. Profile, "Data and privacy" lets you withdraw your consent to AI processing; nothing more is sent to the AI provider until you agree again.
- Type instead of speaking, and turn voice replies off in Settings, if you prefer.
Because nothing on the server is stored under your name, there is nothing there we could look up as yours.
Adults only
Weftwell is made for adults practicing conversations with other adults. It is not directed at children, and the practice about suicide is only offered to people who say they are 18 or older.
If you or someone else is in danger
Weftwell cannot help in an emergency. Call your local emergency number. In the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The app's Help and safety section lists the lines for other regions.
